AVIAN INFLUENZA GUIDANCE
FOR FARM WORKERS

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is a virus also known as the "bird flu".  Bird flu is caused by infection with avian influenza Type A viruses (e.g., H5N1, H7N9).  These viruses spread naturally in wild aquatic birds but can infect poultry and other birds and other animal species.  Although bird flu usually does not infect people, there are some rare cases of human infection.  People can get sick with bird flu when they come into contact with infected birds or animals, which may include dairy cattle and poultry.  While humans are rarely infected with bird flu, there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission in the United States and very limited and sporadic reports in other areas of the world where HPAI is endemic.
